Migration from Azure China CDN to Azure Front Door

Azure China CDN will be retire from December 1, 2025. Please migrate to Azure Front Door or an alternative CDN before November 15, 2025. This document talks about the comparison and resource mapping between Azure China CDN and Azure Front Door, and provide guidance for the migration to Azure Front Door.

Important

  • Please read through the comparison and resource mapping between Azure China CDN and Azure Front Door in Azure China CDN and AFD comparison to determine if Azure Front Door is the best option. If it’s not compatible, please consider an alternative third-party solution.
  • If you don’t migrate by November 15, 2025, Azure Front Door team will migrate eligible Azure China CDN profiles to Azure Front Door. However, if your Azure CDN profile is disabled or has no active request in the past 3 months, or your Azure CDN profile isn’t compatible for migration based on the gap mentioned in Azure China CDN and AFD comparison, Azure Front Door can’t and won’t migrate your profile and your service will experience service disruption from December 1, 2025. In this case, you need to consider an alternative third party CDN solution.

Migration to Azure Front Door when using Azure China CDN for mainland China CDN only

  1. Read the service comparison and resource mapping sections and decide to use Azure Front Door or not. If you decide to use Azure Front Door, go the next steps.

  2. Log in https://portal.azure.cn, search for Front Door and CDN profiles.

  3. Create Azure Front Door profiles with the resources you have on Azure China CDN and choose standard, or premium based on your needs. Choose premium if you want to use Web Application Firewall and Private Link to origins. Otherwise, choose standard.

  4. Test Azure Front Door functionality by binding the local host IP to AFD IP.

  5. If the validation is all successful, change DNS record for custom domain to Azure Front Door endpoint.

Migration to Azure Front Door when using Azure China CDN for overseas delivery only

If you are using Azure China CDN’s overseas capabilities and decide to continue to use Azure Front Door.

  1. Apply for a public Azure subscription.
  2. Log into Azure public portal via https://portal.azure.com.
  3. Create Azure Front Door profiles with the resources you have on Azure China CDN global delivery and choose standard, or premium based on your needs. Choose premium if you want to use Web Application Firewall and Private Link to origins. Otherwise, choose standard. create Azure Front Door profiles
  4. Test Azure Front Door functionality by binding the local host IP to public AFD IP.
  5. If the validation is successful, change DNS record for custom domain to public Azure Front Door endpoint.

Migration to Azure Front Door when using Azure China CDN for both mainland and overseas delivery

  1. Read the service comparison and resource mapping sections and decide to use Azure Front Door or not. If you decide to use Azure Front Door, go the next steps.
  2. Log in https://portal.azure.cn, search for Front Door and CDN profiles.
  3. Create Azure Front Door profiles with the resources you have on Azure China CDN and choose standard, or premium based on your needs. Choose premium if you want to use Web Application Firewall and Private Link to origins. Otherwise, choose standard. create Azure Front Door profiles
  4. Test Azure Front Door functionality by binding the local host IP to AFD IP.
  5. Apply for a public Azure subscription.
  6. Log into Azure public portal via https://portal.azure.com.
  7. Create Azure Front Door profiles with the resources you have on Azure China CDN global delivery and choose standard, or premium based on your needs. Choose premium if you want to use Web Application Firewall and Private Link to origins. Otherwise, choose standard.
  8. Test Azure Front Door functionality by binding the local host IP to public AFD IP.
  9. Add both public and China Azure Front Door’s endpoint to this Azure Traffic Manager.
