Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server: June 2026 release

The June 2026 version of Azure Database for PostgreSQL is now available. This version introduces new features and enhancements, resolves known issues, and includes essential security patches to ensure optimal performance and security.

Note

New servers created on or after June 5, 2026, automatically onboard to this latest version. Existing servers update during their next scheduled maintenance. Azure deployments roll out region by region, so availability might vary and the global rollout can take up to one month. Monitor your scheduled maintenance notifications to know when the update will be applied to your server.

The following released version, date, and content only correspond to the actual deployment of the Microsoft Azure Clouds.

It provides the evolution history of Azure Database for PostgreSQL service on Azure Public Cloud in most cases.

Please note that in some cases, it may not be consistent with the actual deployment of Azure operated by 21Vianet.

Engine version changes

Features

  • Support for pre-upgrade validation checks prior to Major Version Upgrade preview was announced in June 2026. Pre-upgrade validation checks are generally available as of August 2026.
  • Major version upgrade support for PG18 released worldwide.
  • Added Major Version Upgrade support to PostgreSQL 17 and PostgreSQL 18 for customers using ephemeral tablespaces.
  • Onboarded temporal_tables extension.
  • Added support for DROP CAST.

Improvements

  • Major Version Upgrade - Improved upgrade reliability for databases with a high number of large objects (LOs), reducing the risk of upgrade failures due to memory pressure.
  • Improved failover and scale operation reliability by reducing vCore gateway switchover time from up to five minutes to less than one minute, helping minimize customer downtime.
